Software

As many of our TIMS users from institutions around the world will testify, the best learning solution in this computer enabled world is one which includes both hardware AND software.

TutorTIMS™: Teaching Software

TIMS Interactives: download software

TIMS-Interactives™ are a suite of programs designed to enhance the student's learning of telecommunications principles using the industry standard MATLAB™ math applications software alongside the TIMS hardware modeling system.

TIMS-Interactives™ programs combine the equations, text and graphs encountered in traditional telecommunications text books and bring these elements together in a dynamic, user controllable, multi-window environment. This dynamic environment allows TIMS-Interactives™ to provide a unique link between the computational power of software and real-world hardware implementations: some TIMS-Interactives™ interface with the TIMS hardware while others provide output file data which can actually be run on TIMS hardware.

Unleashing the math processing power of MATLAB™, the Interactives are able to help students see the seemingly hidden interactions of various variables, as well as the effects on the system of changing variables one at a time.

Given that telecommunications lab time is often limited, students are able to run the Interactives either at college or at home, without the need to spend time on MATLAB coding and syntax. TIMS-Interactives™ will also run on the MATLAB™ Student Version. To assist the student, each Interactive includes separate screens of block and TIMS module patching diagrams, and an instructor-editable theory screen.

Examples of TIMS-Interactives topics include:

  • Investigating Convolutional encoding and decoding.
  • Detecting and analysing BER of noisy digital data of single sample, multiple samples and matched filter receivers.
  • Generating and analysing digital sequences to 14 stages, incl. Max Length & Gold codes with EPROM file output.
  • Interfacing high speed PC-based instrumentation to MATLAB™ for acquisition and analysis.

PC-based Instrument: download software

With the increased processing power of personal computers, students are no longer limited to only viewing their signals in the time domain, on a basic oscilloscope. PC-based multi-instruments are now available which are both affordable and have outstanding performance.

Emona TIMS offers two options for such PC-based instrumentation with wide bandwidth oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer displays, as well as true RMS digital voltmeter and frequency counter functions. Both options incorporate the powerful PICO 3204 virtual instrument.

The 3204 is available stand-alone or built-into the TIMS-301C PC-Enabled Learning System.

The 3204 has 2 input channels plus an external trigger input. Analog bandwidth is 50MHz, with a sample rate of 50MS/s and 8 bit vertical resolution (12 bit in Enhanced Mode). Buffer memory is a deep 256kS.

Interfacing to the PC and installation is very straightforward: connect the 3204 to the PC's USB port, with the supplied cable, and run the PicoScope instrument software.

The PicoScope Software provides the oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer and meter on-screen displays, plusÊover 20 other measurements, including SINAD, SNR, IMD and Gain.

This inbuilt instrument is supplied with drivers for controlling it directly from programs such as LabVIEW, in order to create your own custom instruments for acquisition and analysis.
